Itacaré was made for walking. The village fits within a stroll, the most famous beaches begin where the street ends, and the car that so many people rent at the airport spends much of the trip parked in a hard-to-find spot. This is the guide for those who arrive by bus or transfer, and also for those who come with children, which is another way of traveling without hurry.

On foot: the village and the town beaches

From Pituba, the street of restaurants and tour agencies, Praia da Concha is a few minutes away. Coroinha and Resende are ten minutes away; Tiririca, Costa and Ribeira follow in sequence along the same dirt road, one cove after another. From Ribeira starts the Prainha trail, forty minutes through forest with no cell signal: it is the most beautiful walk you can do on foot, and it is worth going with a guide. The canoe to Pontal leaves from the port, at Coroinha, crosses the river in under ten minutes and costs between R$ 5 and R$ 10 per person, depending on the number of passengers.

By bus: the beaches along the road

Engenhoca, Havaizinho, Camboinha and Itacarezinho are on the BA-001, and the Trilha das Quatro Praias does not start in the village: it begins on the highway. The economical way is the Rota Transportes intercity bus to Ilhéus, which leaves from the bus station, on Rua Miranda, every hour between 5h and 18h. Tell the driver you want to get off at the trailhead and arrange a time for the bus to pass again on the way back: the last return bus is early. The same line serves Serra Grande, 32 km away. Jeribucaçu is not practical by bus, because the entrance is 5 km from the highway.

There is no recent reference for the fare to the trails; in 2022 it was under R$ 10. The full trip to Ilhéus cost between R$ 20 and R$ 25 in 2024 and 2025.

By taxi, mototaxi and tour agency

There is no Uber or 99 in Itacaré. Taxis leave from the square and work with a fixed price and an agreed return time: references range from R$ 30 to R$ 50 per leg to R$ 80 to R$ 120 per car, round trip, for the farthest beaches. The mototaxi, with a stand in Pituba, covers the village for a few reais. The agencies sell the Trilha das Quatro Praias with transport and guide: in March 2025 it cost around R$ 170 per person, for a full day with an optional stop at Cachoeira do Tijuípe; the boat trip on the Rio de Contas, with Cachoeira do Cleandro and sunset at Pontal, was in the same price range.

With children: where the sea is gentle

Ribeira is the family beach, and the city hall itself recommends it as such: calm sea and a freshwater stream that forms a pool on the sand. Concha, with almost no waves and the best beach-shack facilities, is the other safe choice, within walking distance of the center. At low tide, Resende, Pontal and Arruda form shallow pools: check the tide table and go when the tide is below half a meter. Among the trail beaches, Jeribucaçu and Engenhoca have a river mouth that forms calm, fresh water.

Leave Praia da Costa, with its strong sea and currents, and Tiririca on a day with waves, to the adults. At Pontal, stay on the river side. Cachoeira do Tijuípe, easy to reach, with a restaurant and restroom, is a trip for the whole family; the Cleandro boat does not accept children under five.

Lodging, health and the little details

If you are traveling with small children, look for a pousada with a pool and close to Pituba: that way you can do the whole day on foot. The village paving is cobblestone and hills, and after rain there are puddles; a baby sling beats a stroller. The municipal hospital is on Rua 31 de Março, in the center, and there is a private clinic on Rua João de Souza. On the trail beaches there is no cell signal: arrange your return before heading down.
