Itacaré has no airport and no dual carriageway, which is exactly why it is still Itacaré. You arrive along a winding road between the Atlantic Forest and the sea, the BA-001, and the last half hour, descending from Serra Grande with the ocean on your right, is already part of the trip. Here is the map of every route, with what it costs and how long it takes.

By plane: land in Ilhéus

The nearest airport is Jorge Amado, in Ilhéus (IOS), about 75 km away. Reopened in 2024, it is served by Azul, Gol and Latam, with direct flights from São Paulo (Guarulhos, Congonhas and Campinas), Belo Horizonte and Salvador; in 2026 Gol also began flying from Rio (Galeão). Outside high season, many itineraries connect through Salvador or São Paulo, so it is worth comparing arriving via Salvador: the capital's airport has more flights and cheaper fares, but it is 270 km (via the ferry) or 390 km (by land) from Itacaré.

From Ilhéus airport to Itacaré

It takes 1h30 to 1h40 along the BA-001, which is paved, signposted, toll-free and full of curves. There are three ways to cover the stretch:

  • Transfer or taxi: the most practical option, straight from arrivals to the door of your pousada. In October 2026 the Uber app estimated between R$ 180 and R$ 200 for the trip; transfer companies charged in the same range per car, with a cheaper shared option per person. Book ahead: the airport does not have a taxi line for Itacaré at all hours.
  • Bus: Rota Transportes runs Ilhéus–Itacaré from the Ilhéus bus station (5 km from the airport, R$ 30 to R$ 40 by taxi), with departures throughout the day and a journey of about two hours; fares were around R$ 30 in 2026. The Itacaré bus station is at Rua Miranda, 135, in the center.
  • Rental car: the rental agencies are at the airport. In Itacaré, a car is useful for the beaches along the road (Engenhoca, Jeribucaçu, Itacarezinho); in the village, you get around on foot. Parking at the beaches costs R$ 20 to R$ 30 per day.

If you are traveling in daylight, stop at the Mirante de Serra Grande viewpoint, 80 meters above the sea and signposted along the road: it is the classic view of the coast.

From Salvador

There is no direct road through the mainland: the shortest route goes through the ferry-boat. By bus, you take the ferry from the São Joaquim Terminal to Bom Despacho, on Itaparica Island, and from there Águia Branca or Cidade Sol along the BA-001 — a journey of 5h to 5h40, between R$ 90 and R$ 120 in October 2026, with departures in the morning and early afternoon. By car, the ferry crossing takes 35 to 40 minutes; the official 2026 fare table charges R$ 65 to R$ 92 per small car (weekday and weekend) and R$ 7 to R$ 10 per foot passenger, with departures every hour from 05:00 to 23:30. On holidays the queue can last hours: the "Hora Marcada" service solves that. After the crossing it is 240 to 270 km along the BA-001, via Nazaré, Valença and Camamu, about 5h30. The all-land alternative, via the BR-324 and BR-101 through Santo Antônio de Jesus, is 390 km and six hours, toll-free since May 2025.

From Porto Seguro and Trancoso

It is about 376 km and 5h30 by car, along the BR-367 and BR-101 to Itabuna, then Ilhéus and the BA-001; Rota Transportes also runs buses between Porto Seguro and Itacaré.

You've arrived: getting around

In the village, everything is on foot: the town beaches, restaurants and Pituba are just a few minutes away. For the beaches along the road, taxi drivers work with fixed prices and an agreed pickup time for the round trip — in the range of R$ 80 to R$ 120 per car, depending on the beach. Arrange your return before heading down the trail: at the more remote beaches and trails there is no mobile signal. The agencies sell tours with transport included, and bicycle and canoe rentals are available for Pontal.
