When to Go to Itacaré: Weather, Seasons, Surf, Tides and Festivals
Summer all year round, with the sea never dropping below 25 °C: what changes is the party scene, the prices, the waves and the tides. A month-by-month guide to the best time for every kind of trip to Itacaré.
Itacaré has no winter. The thermometer stays between 20 and 30 degrees all year, the sea never falls below 25, and the right question isn't "when is it warm" but "what do I want to find": the village packed and in full party mode, a beach all to yourself, the autumn swell or the lowest tide of the month. Each answer points to a different calendar.
The weather, month by month
Thirty years of records show a town of permanent summer: highs of 28 °C from December to March, lows of 21 °C in July and August. It rains all year, with no clearly defined dry season, but there is a wetter stretch from April to July, with April at the peak, and a second bump in November. August, September and October are the months with the least rain, and the town often wakes up to sunshine. Rain here comes in showers, not endless gray days: a "rainy day" in Itacaré almost always still has beach time.
The sea follows suit: 28 to 29 °C from January to May, 25 to 26 °C in August and September. There is no such thing as cold water.
The seasons
High season runs from December through Carnival, with New Year's Eve and the days of revelry as the peak, and returns on long holiday weekends: according to the state hotel association, Holy Week puts Itacaré among the five most sought-after beach destinations in Bahia. This is the Itacaré of a packed village, a boiling Pituba and bookings made well in advance.
Low season runs from March to June and from August to November. Lodging can cost up to 40% less, the trail-access beaches are almost empty and, even so, in 2026 occupancy stayed between 65% and 70% in the low season, according to the municipal tourism office: the village doesn't shut down, and the restaurants and nightlife carry on.
For surfing
Here the sources disagree, and it's worth explaining why. The technical readings point to autumn and winter: April is the month of the cleanest waves at Itacarezinho, and from June to November the south swells arrive, with sets of 1 to 2 meters. Travel guides prefer December to February, when the sea is more consistent and the weather more settled. In practice: if you want big waves, go from April to October; if you want to learn, go in summer, with warm water and busy surf schools. The competition calendar backs up the first group: the Baiano de Surf stage takes place in February at Engenhoca, and the Itacaré Surf Festival, with Taça Brasil, takes over Tiririca between June and August.
For the natural pools
Resende, Pontal, Arruda, Engenhoca and Jeribucaçu form pools when the tide drops below half a meter. This happens around the new moon and full moon, when the Sun, Earth and Moon line up and the tides are stronger. Travel during those weeks and check the month's tide table before heading out: low tide can fall in the morning or in the afternoon.
For wildlife
From July to October humpback whales move up the Bahian coast, peaking between mid-July and September; the Projeto Baleia Jubarte estimate for 2026 was over 35,000 animals, and the coast of Itacaré and Ilhéus is among the viewing spots. From September to March is the turtle nesting season in the protected area between Itacaré and Serra Grande: loggerheads from October to January, hawksbills from December to March.
