A long stretch of beach between Itacaré and Maraú, right beside an ecovillage. You can reach it on foot in about 2 hours from Pontal at low tide, or by car in about 1 hour along a dirt road.

The river rises to your leg, then to your waist, and the current decides the rest. Anyone walking along the sand to Piracanga has to cross that last stretch of water before setting foot on the beach, and the crossing is only possible at the right time. On the other side lie the boundary between two municipalities, a community that lives by ecological practices and an open sea with nothing to interrupt it. The beach demands planning. In return, it offers few people and almost no facilities.

Six kilometers of sand

The shortest route on the map is also the slowest. From the center of Itacaré, a boat crossing takes you to Pontal in five minutes at most. From there, Barra do Piracanga lies 6 km to the north, about two hours' walk along the beach, done at low tide. It is a long, open walk, for those who like to stroll with the sea beside them and no rush.

The alternative is the car: about 1 hour along a dirt road, through the Maraú Peninsula, without crossing the river. Overland access was once a source of conflict between the community and a businessman who closed the road. It is worth checking conditions before setting out.

The river that divides two municipalities

The Piracanga River marks the boundary between Itacaré and Maraú, and it is the critical point for anyone arriving on foot. At high tide, the current makes the crossing unfeasible. At low tide, the depth varies between leg- and waist-deep. The advice is straightforward: go in a pair and go during the day. Plan your return with the same care, because the tide that made the outward trip easier can complicate the way back.

Along the strip of sand, the sea is open. Swimming calls for caution, with no overdoing it and no straying far from the shore.

A community by the beach

Piracanga is known for the Instituto Piracanga, which maintains a community there devoted to ecological practices and retreats. The ecovillage sits right by the beach and is part of the place's identity. There is no camping. Anyone wanting to stay overnight must book lodging in advance.

Facilities on the beach are minimal. Don't count on a beach kiosk, chair rental or any comfort beyond the sand and whatever you bring with you.

Who it's for

For those who enjoy walking long distances and accept depending on the tide. For those seeking a long, undeveloped beach, or who will be staying at the ecovillage and have already booked. It is not the right beach for anyone with difficulty walking, for families with small children, or for those who want calm swimming and services close at hand: the sea is open, the river crossing demands attention and support is minimal.
