A cove between two hills, with forest running down to the sand and powerful surf, at the end of a 40 to 50-minute trail from Ribeira with climbs, streams and viewpoints.
From above, Prainha reveals itself all at once: a cove between two hills, the forest sweeping down to the sand and the sea breaking hard below. Those who reach the viewpoint after almost an hour on the trail tend to stop here before going on. Behind them lie the roots, streams and climbs of the Mata Atlântica; ahead, the beach that makes the effort worthwhile.
Through the forest, from Ribeira
The classic route starts at the right-hand end of Praia da Ribeira (beach). It is 2 to 3 km of trail, 40 to 50 minutes, with ups and downs through a stretch of preserved Mata Atlântica. The level is moderate. Along the way there are streams, small waterfalls and at least one water crossing, which hikers often mention among the best moments of the walk.
The weak point is signage: there is almost none, and there are several forks. The route is now considered safe and can be done without a guide, using a navigation app, but there are reports of people getting lost. Those who prefer company can find local guides; the reported prices range from R$ 20 to R$ 60 per person, depending on the guide or agency, and some only take you one way, leaving the return up to you.
At the top, the view
Near the summit, the viewpoints open the landscape to both sides: Ribeira falling behind, Prainha appearing ahead. It is the natural pause on the trail, and the best place to catch your breath before the final descent.
Other ways to the sand
There are alternatives to the long trail. Access through the Villas de São José/Via Verde condominium is paid. Another option is the day use at Restaurante Grauçá, at R$ 60, with a trail of about 10 minutes. By car, access is through the Itacaré Eco Resort, with a day use of R$ 200, of which R$ 100 is credit toward food and drinks. Confirm prices and conditions before you go.
Real waves
Prainha is a surf beach, with strong waves and currents. The break has hollow lefts and rights and calls for intermediate or advanced level. The wind is northeast in summer and south in winter, and conditions are best with no wind. For those who don't surf, swimming demands extra care, and the beach is not recommended for small children.
On the sand, facilities are minimal: a single stall, with coconut water, fruit, grilled cheese and drinks, plus a shower and restroom. There is no lodging. Outside high season, visitors tend to miss having food, so bring your own snack.
Who it's for
For those who like to hike and watch surfing up close, and who accept a beach without comforts in exchange for forest and open sea. Intermediate and advanced surfers will find a serious break here. It is not the choice for anyone who struggles with climbs, for families with small children or for those who want a chair, kiosk shade and a menu. For them, Ribeira, at the start of the trail, is the simpler alternative.
