A sheltered cove 2 km from the center of Itacaré, with a shallow Ribeira river lagoon at low tide, moqueca beach shacks, car access and the start of the trails to Siriaco and Prainha.

At low tide, the Ribeira river reaches the sea slowly and leaves a shallow lagoon at the end of the beach. That is where the children gather, buckets in hand, while the smell of fried fish and moqueca drifts over from the beach shacks, just steps from your towel. The cove wraps around the sea like an arm, and the sound that rules the sand is that of conversation, not waves. Ribeira is Itacaré's family beach, and there are very practical reasons for that.

Where the river meets the sea

The Ribeira river flows out at the end of the beach. At low tide, the meeting of river and sea forms a shallow lagoon where children play without straying far from their parents. Upstream, the watercourse makes small waterfalls and a dam with a freshwater natural pool, ideal for rinsing off the salt.

The cove is sheltered, and the sea stays calm for most of the year. It is the best beach for children in Itacaré. The waves are gentle, which is why Ribeira also suits beginner surfers, who gain confidence without the pressure of a rougher sea.

A table set at the edge of the sand

The traditional beach shacks serve moqueca and fried fish, and there are chairs for an unhurried lunch. There are also several cabanas with drinks and snacks. What there isn't is a pousada: the area is an environmental protection zone, and the beach lives on day visitors only, with no seafront lodging.

If you want some action beyond the sand, this is where you'll find the Conduru Ecoturismo treetop adventure course and zip line.

From here, to the other beaches

Ribeira is the starting point for two trails: 15 minutes to Praia do Siriaco and 40 minutes to Prainha. It is also where the four-beach trail ends, for those who make the journey on foot. It is the last beach reachable by car along the Caminho das Praias, which makes it a good base for the day.

Getting there and parking

The beach is about 2 km from the center: 5 minutes by car or 25 on foot along Rua da Ribeira, which is paved. Parking is at the end of the street; it is small and paid. On a visit in January, the reported fee was R$ 10. The beach tends to get quite crowded on weekends and holidays, and on those days it's worth arriving early or leaving the car in the center and walking.

Who it's for

For families with children, for anyone who wants to have lunch at the water's edge, and for those just starting to surf. Also for those who use the beach as a starting point for the trails. It is not the choice for anyone seeking silence and empty sand on a weekend or holiday, nor for anyone who wants to stay overnight by the sea: there are no pousadas on the beach.
