A strip of sand in the center of Itacaré, right next to Concha: a sandbar at low tide, fishing boats, historic colonial houses and a view of Pontal. Not suitable for swimming.

The low tide uncovers the sand little by little, and by late afternoon the Coroa is a different beach altogether. A sandbar rises in front of the waterfront houses, the water pulls back until it is almost still, and someone starts kicking a ball around. Farther along, fishing boats come and go from the mooring. Across the river, straight ahead, lies Praia do Pontal. It is the most urban beach in Itacaré, and the one that most resembles the life of the town.

The sandbar that gave it its name

At low tide a sandbar forms, the "coroa" that gives the beach its name. Locals call it Coroinha. At that hour the water is a mix of river and sea, shallow and wave-free, almost motionless.

As the tide comes in, the scene changes: a current appears. That is why the first thing to do when you arrive is to check the tide, before anything else.

A port before it was a beach

The Coroa was the mooring for the vessels that carried cacao, and the colonial houses along the waterfront bear witness to that period. Its role as a port never ended: this is where the fishing boats that supply the town leave from and return to, and where the boats crossing the Rio de Contas to Pontal depart.

That vocation comes at a cost: the Coroa is the only beach in town not suitable for swimming, precisely because it works as a port and mooring. Visitors tend to highlight the walk along the waterfront, the town sign and the movement of the boats at the end of the afternoon. Come for the scenery and the life around you, not for a swim.

The town square

When the tide goes out, the sand turns into a field for football, footvolley and volleyball. On big dates, the Coroa becomes a stage: Carnaval with trios elétricos, the festival of Iemanjá on 2 February, the São João bonfires and the 2 de Julho parade. The rest of the time, it is a place for an unhurried walk along the waterfront, facing the old houses.

Who it's for

For those who want to feel the center of Itacaré, watch boats arriving and people playing ball, and cross over to Pontal. For those who like walking along the waterfront at the end of the afternoon. It is not the beach for anyone looking for a sea swim, quiet or beach-hut facilities: with no huts of its own, it relies on what the Orla and Concha offer. For swimming, neighboring Concha is the natural choice.
